How to save money while renovating?

You can save money on your home renovations by investing in value adding renovations, finding construction materials on marketplace websites,   refinishing your cabinets, taking a DIY approach and finding low cost storage alternatives.

Home renovations can be expensive and you’ll be amazed at how soon these costs add up. Whether you are remodelling the kitchen or a bathroom or the whole house, there are ways to make it cost-effective without having to cut the corners.

Cosmetic Changes

1. Look for small cosmetic changes that can be done. For most spaces at home, small cosmetic changes and minute details can improve the look. From changing the hinges and doorknobs to maybe adding wallpaper, these are makeovers that won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Value Adding Renovations

2. Invest in home renovations that will add long-term value and thus add to the savings. For instance, switching up the flooring from carpet to hardwood can drastically improve the return on investment for your home.

Use Reusable Materials

3. Not everything has to be brand new. Scout through thrift stores to find elegant and vintage pieces that can add value to your home. You may also be able to find renovation materials on marketplace websites like Craiglist that people are selling for a discount. My friend bought used doors from me when I finished renovating my basement. Set out on a treasure hunt, and you’ll be amazed at the things you can find.

DIY Approach

4. Take a DIY approach where possible. Depending on your skillset and design understanding, it is alright to take a Do-it-yourself approach for some or your home constructions projects. A little bit of research, expert youtube videos and some courage can cut your costs down drastically. I was able to cut down costs on a garage storage shelf by installing it myself rather than paying someone for the same.

Refinish Cabinets

5. For kitchen makeovers, think about aspects that you can make do with and the ones you can’t. You could always take on a cost-friendly kitchen makeover adventure. If the cabinets and drawers are in good condition, you could always restore them with vibrant and trendy colours that match the space. Repainting and refinishing them can cost you much lesser than having to replace the whole cabinetry. You could also just replace the cabinet doors rather than replacing the entire cabinet in your kitchen.

Consider Easier Alternatives

6. For instance, if you were to add a backsplash to your kitchen with tile and grout, imagine the time and cost you’ll be investing to upgrade the space. Instead, consider a good quality peel and stick backsplash that will look great along with the upgraded cabinetry.

Cost Effective Closets

7. Efficient utilization of smaller spaces should ideally start from your closet. Use minimalistic design options to create cheap shelving units. This will make the space look clutter-free and can be used appropriately to store your belongings. Quite a few low cost storage alternatives may be bought at stores like IKEA. You do not need to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade your storage spaces.

Paint Walls

8. Freshen up your walls with a coat of paint. You can make smaller spaces look brighter and larger with a simple coat of paint. Choose colours that are lighter in shade and blend well with the existing paint colour.
