How long a piece of furniture lasts depends completely on the material used and the craftsman however there are some guidelines that can be used as described below. For example, sofas should be good for 5 years+ and therefore many stores offer a 5 year warranty.
Sofas: These are available in all shapes and sizes however the most common materials available are fabric, polyester, wool, leather, suede and nylon. In fact mostly people use fabric or leather sofas in their living rooms. Leather sofas are generally good for more than five years and it is convenient if you purchase a warranty for this term if available.
Dining Tables: Cheaper dining tables start to wore down after 5-6 years but good quality ones can last for upto 10 years. You have the option to polish or refinish the surface and this may add another five years to the life of a wooden dining table.
Coffee Tables: Small tables and side tables are good for 7-10 years unless you somehow crack the glass in it.
Bed Frames: These could last a long time, even as long as upto 15 years.
Mattresses: Most mattresses come with a 10 year warranty and usually last for this period. It might be time to replace a mattress when and if it starts to sag or soften up more than expected.
Drawers and Night Stands: Again these are mostly made up of wood and can last 7-10 years except for some of the cheaper ones that do not use solid wood.
Television: I have had older televisions work for over 12 years and a new one that was wasted after two. My discussion with a tv technician indicated that these days companies want you to purchase a new tv after every 5-7 years. You can usually get a 4 or 5 year protection plan from stores such as Best Buy or Costco and it may be a good idea to buy this protection.
Desks: These can last about 7-8 years depending upon the material.
Chairs: Good quality chairs can last 5-7 years, but lower quality ones will fade earlier.
Recliners: These last about 6-8 years however you will see a decline in the quality after five years. It may be good to replace one after 5-6 years.
Patio Furniture: Patio furniture is built for the long term and can last 7-10 years. Metal furniture may however catch rust earlier on. It is important to store this furniture properly during the winter and snow season.
The timelines indicated are all averages based on experience but the range can vary depending upon the quality and material of the product.
